Zafferano & Co. Friends: Chef Luca Marcato

Bio

Chef and restaurateur Luca Marcato has always loved music, but little did he know he’d showcase it. Graduating from culinary school at 18, he worked his way up through the restaurants in Milan, including St. Andrews. He left Italy when he was recruited by the Trusthouse Forte restaurant group in 1987 to work at the celebrated Quaglino’s restaurant in New York City. From there, he went on to work for renowned chef/restaurateur Gennaro Picone at Malvasia (1989) before returning to Milan to work at St. Andrews on Via Montenapoleone. However, it wasn’t long before New York City called again, and in 1992, he signed on as seasonal Chef at Sapore di Mare, Pino Luongo’s Hamptons summer destination. In fall of 1993 he meets Philippe Bernard's of Osteria al Doge, bringing Venetian cuisine to Times Square. Building on al Doge's success, Bernard opened Osteria Laguna on the East Side, and Luca joined him there as Chef. In 1998, Luca decided to branch out on his own and opened Luca Restaurant on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, enjoying stellar reviews and a loyal following for his distinct Milanese cuisine. He rebranded in 2008 as Cavatappo Grill, merging the Cavatappo Wine Bar (2005) concept, with the restaurant adding an extensive wine and cocktail menu to the mix.

Luca's Jazz Corner Through his restaurant, Luca got to know many musicians and performers, and jazz became a special passion for him. He bonded with jazz and cabaret great John Pizzarelli and Jessica Molaskey, over a shared love of Bigoli with Lamb Ragu’, Fusilli Cacio e Pepe and Music, which sparked the creation of Luca's Jazz Corner at Cavatappo Grill, a wonderfully intimate performing space within the restaurant. Since it launched in March 2016, Luca’s Jazz Corner has been a runaway success, offering an exciting roster of jazz and cabaret artists unique to the Upper East Side.
