Americano (A Lighter Italian Classic)
By Master Chef Gianluca Deiana Abis
History
The Americano cocktail has its origins in the 1860s in Italy, originally known as the Caffè Americano. The drink was popularized by American expats who found the Negroni too strong for their tastes. The Americano replaced the gin with soda water, giving it a lighter, more refreshing flavor. It became a favorite during aperitivo time and remains a beloved classic in Italian bars today.
Ingredients
30ml Campari
30ml Sweet Vermouth
Soda water (to top up)
Lemon slice or orange twist (for garnish)
Ice (large cubes)
Instructions
Mix the CocktailIn a highball glass, combine Campari and sweet vermouth. Add ice cubes to fill the glass about halfway.
Top UpGently pour soda water to top up the glass and give the drink a refreshing effervescence.
GarnishAdd a slice of lemon or orange twist to garnish. This adds a zesty aroma that complements the drink's bittersweet flavor.
EnjoySip slowly and enjoy the balanced mix of bitterness and lightness!
Appetizer Pairing
Pair the Americano with Caponata di Melanzane (Sicilian Eggplant Stew). The sweetness and acidity of the dish perfectly complement the bitterness of the Campari, while the flavors of eggplant and olives provide a savory contrast.
