Aperol Spritz
(The Iconic Venetian Aperitivo)
History
The Aperol Spritz is one of Italy’s most beloved aperitivi, originating in Venice in the early 1900s. The drink was inspired by the Austrian practice of "spritzing" wines with water during the Habsburg rule of northern Italy. In the 1950s, the Barbieri brothers popularized the modern version by using Aperol, Prosecco, and soda water, creating a vibrant, slightly bitter, and effervescent cocktail perfect for pre-dinner sipping. Today, it is a staple of Italian aperitivo culture, especially in the Veneto region.
Ingredients
90ml Prosecco (preferably brut or extra dry)
60ml Aperol
30ml Soda water
Orange slice (for garnish)
Ice cubes
Instructions
Prepare the Glass
Fill a large wine glass or rock glass with ice cubes to chill it.
Pour the Aperol
Add Aperol first to ensure even mixing.
Add Prosecco
Slowly pour the Prosecco to maintain its bubbles and light texture.
Top with Soda Water
Gently add soda water to finish the cocktail.
Garnish & Serve
Add a fresh orange slice to enhance the drink’s citrusy aroma.
Stir lightly and enjoy this crisp, bittersweet aperitivo!
Appetizer Pairing
Pair the Aperol Spritz with Olive all’Ascolana (Stuffed and Fried Olives). These crispy, golden olives filled with veal and cheese complement the bitter-sweet flavors of the Spritz, making for a perfect aperitivo experience.
