Blood Orange Martini

By Master Chef Gianluca Deiana Abis

History

Blood oranges, especially the Tarocco, Moro, and Sanguinello varieties from Sicily, have been cultivated in Italy for centuries. Their deep red color and naturally sweet, citrusy flavor make them a prized ingredient in Italian cuisine and cocktails. This Blood Orange Martini enhances the richness of the fruit with a smooth balance of gin and vermouth, creating a cocktail that is both refreshing and sophisticated—perfect for aperitivo hour.

Ingredients

  • 50ml (1.75 oz) Premium Italian Gin (Malfy con Arancia or Gin del Professore)

  • 25ml (¾ oz) Fresh Blood Orange Juice (preferably Sicilian Tarocco)

  • 15ml (½ oz) Dry Vermouth (Cocchi Americano or Martini Riserva Speciale Ambrato)

  • 5ml (1 teaspoon) Blood Orange Liqueur (Solerno or Aperol, optional)

  • Ice cubes

  • Blood orange slice or twist, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Chill the Glass:

    • Place a Martini glass in the freezer for 10 minutes to achieve the perfect chill.

  2. Shake the Drink:

    • Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.

    • Add the gin, fresh blood orange juice, dry vermouth, and blood orange liqueur (if using).

    • Shake vigorously for about 15 seconds.

  3. Strain & Serve:

    • Strain into the chilled Martini glass for a smooth, crisp finish.

  4. Garnish:

    • Garnish with a thin blood orange slice on the rim or a twist of blood orange peel, expressed over the glass to release its essential oils.

Perfect Pairing – Italian Aperitivo Companion

Bruschetta con Ricotta e Miele – A slice of toasted Pane Toscano topped with fresh ricotta, a drizzle of Sicilian orange blossom honey, and a sprinkle of crushed pistachios pairs beautifully with the citrus-forward notes of this cocktail.

Chef Tip:

For a slightly sweeter and more aromatic variation, replace dry vermouth with Lillet Blanc, which enhances the fruity and floral notes of the blood orange.

A stunning, vibrant, and truly Italian-style Blood Orange Martini, perfect for any elegant gathering or aperitivo moment. Salute! 🍊🍸
