Cerasuolo di Vittoria

Cerasuolo di Vittoria

By Master Chef Gianluca Deiana Abis

1. HistoryCerasuolo di Vittoria, Sicily’s only DOCG wine, has its origins in the southeastern part of the island near the town of Vittoria. Dating back to the 1600s, the wine takes its name from the Italian word cerasuolo, meaning “cherry-red,” a nod to its distinctive hue and fresh, fruity profile. The unique blend of Nero d’Avola and Frappato, two native Sicilian grapes, creates a wine that is both vibrant and balanced. Frappato brings lightness and floral aromas, while Nero d’Avola adds structure, depth, and ripe red fruit. This harmonious combination has made Cerasuolo di Vittoria a symbol of Sicily’s rich winemaking heritage and a testament to the island’s ability to craft elegant, food-friendly wines.

2. PairingCerasuolo di Vittoria’s medium body, fresh acidity, and bright fruit make it a versatile companion for a variety of Sicilian and Mediterranean dishes.

  • Caponata (Eggplant Stew): The wine’s cherry and berry notes complement the sweet-sour flavors of caponata, while its freshness balances the dish’s richness.

  • Pasta alla Norma: The wine’s bright acidity and fruity profile lift the earthy eggplant and tangy tomato sauce.

  • Grilled Tuna or Swordfish: Its soft tannins and floral hints enhance the natural sweetness and slight smokiness of grilled seafood.

  • Sicilian Sausage or Meatballs with Tomato Sauce: The wine’s fruit-forward nature and balanced structure pair beautifully with savory meat dishes and herb-infused sauces.

  • Aged Pecorino Siciliano or Ricotta Salata: These cheeses’ salty, tangy flavors find a natural match in Cerasuolo di Vittoria’s lively acidity and juicy fruit.

3. The Top Wineries

  • COS: A pioneering producer that helped revive Cerasuolo di Vittoria’s reputation, COS emphasizes biodynamic practices and crafts elegant, terroir-driven wines.

  • Planeta: A well-known Sicilian winery that creates balanced, approachable Cerasuolo di Vittoria, showcasing the grape blend’s potential.

  • Arianna Occhipinti: A small but highly regarded producer focused on natural winemaking and highlighting Frappato’s delicate, floral qualities in her Cerasuolo wines.

4. The Notes of Master Chef Gianluca Deiana AbisCerasuolo di Vittoria is a wine that truly captures the soul of Sicily. Its vibrant, cherry-red color and harmonious blend of Nero d’Avola and Frappato make it a joy to drink, whether paired with classic Sicilian dishes or enjoyed on its own. I appreciate the way this wine reflects the island’s rich culture and culinary traditions—its bright fruit and fresh acidity cut through rich flavors, while its delicate floral notes enhance lighter fare. For me, Cerasuolo di Vittoria is a perfect balance of elegance and authenticity, a reminder of why Sicily continues to be a rising star in the world of fine wine.
