Cesanese del Piglio
Cesanese del Piglio
By Master Chef Gianluca Deiana Abis
1. History
Cesanese del Piglio is one of Lazio’s most distinguished red wines, produced from the native Cesanese grape in the Piglio area, southeast of Rome. This wine is deeply tied to the region’s history, with records of its cultivation dating back to ancient Roman times. The volcanic soils and rolling hills of the Piglio zone, combined with a Mediterranean climate, create ideal conditions for Cesanese. In 2008, Cesanese del Piglio earned DOCG status, the first in Lazio, cementing its reputation as a high-quality, terroir-driven wine. Known for its medium body, fresh acidity, and balanced tannins, Cesanese del Piglio showcases the unique character of Lazio’s indigenous varietals.
2. Pairing
Cesanese del Piglio’s vibrant red fruit, floral notes, and hint of spice make it a versatile partner for many traditional Italian dishes.
Pasta alla Gricia: The wine’s bright acidity and red berry notes complement the rich, savory flavors of guanciale and Pecorino Romano.
Roast Pork or Porchetta: Its balanced structure and gentle spice echo the herbs and fat in slow-roasted pork, creating a harmonious pairing.
Grilled Lamb with Herbs: The wine’s earthy undertones and moderate tannins enhance the smoky, herbal flavors of lamb cooked over open flames.
Aged Pecorino Toscano or Caciocavallo: Cesanese del Piglio’s fruit and floral elements lift the salty, nutty complexity of aged cheeses.
Truffle and Mushroom Risotto: The wine’s fresh acidity and subtle spiciness provide a beautiful contrast to the rich, umami flavors of truffles and mushrooms.
3. The Top Wineries
Casale della Ioria: A leading producer known for crafting elegant, well-balanced Cesanese del Piglio wines that highlight the grape’s floral and spicy characteristics.
Cantina del Tufaio: This estate specializes in showcasing the unique terroir of the Piglio zone, creating refined Cesanese del Piglio that reflects the volcanic soils and traditional methods.
Terre del Cesanese: A smaller winery dedicated to producing authentic, high-quality Cesanese del Piglio that honors the grape’s history and regional identity.
