Espresso Martini (Italian Style)

By Master Chef Gianluca Deiana Abis

History

The Espresso Martini was originally created in the 1980s in London by bartender Dick Bradsell, but Italy’s deep coffee culture makes this cocktail a natural fit for an Italian-style upgrade. Using high-quality Italian espresso, a touch of Amaro (instead of coffee liqueur), and a premium Italian vodka or grappa, this version enhances the bold coffee flavor while adding a smoother, more refined finish.

Ingredients

  • 45ml (1.5 oz) Premium Italian Vodka (or Grappa for a bolder twist)

  • 30ml (1 oz) Freshly Brewed Italian Espresso (chilled)

  • 15ml (½ oz) Amaro (Amaro Averna or Amaro Montenegro)

  • 10ml (⅓ oz) Simple Syrup (adjust to taste)

  • Ice cubes

  • 3 Coffee Beans, for garnish (La dolce vita symbolism: health, wealth, and happiness)

Instructions

  1. Chill the Glass:

    • Place a coupe or Martini glass in the freezer for 10 minutes to achieve the perfect chill.

  2. Brew & Cool the Espresso:

    • Use a high-quality Italian espresso (Illy or Lavazza), allowing it to cool slightly before shaking.

  3. Shake the Drink:

    • Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.

    • Pour in the vodka (or grappa), fresh espresso, amaro, and simple syrup.

    • Shake vigorously for about 15–20 seconds to create a rich, velvety foam.

  4. Strain & Serve:

    • Strain into the chilled glass, ensuring a smooth, creamy top layer.

  5. Garnish:

    • Place three coffee beans on top of the foam in a triangular pattern—an Italian tradition symbolizing health, wealth, and happiness.

Perfect Pairing – Italian Aperitivo Companion

Biscotti alle Mandorle – A small plate of Cantucci (Tuscan almond biscotti) is the perfect pairing, offering a delightful crunch that complements the smooth, bold espresso flavors.

Chef Tip:

For an extra Italian indulgence, swap vodka for Grappa Riserva, adding deeper complexity and a true nod to Italian after-dinner traditions. If you prefer a creamier version, add a dash of fior di latte or vanilla gelato to the shaker before mixing.

A bold, rich, and truly Italian-style Espresso Martini, perfect for after dinner or an elegant night out. Salute! ☕🍸
