Gattinara

Gattinara

By Master Chef Gianluca Deiana Abis

1. History

Gattinara DOCG is one of Piedmont’s most historic appellations, and its roots in Nebbiolo winemaking go back centuries. Situated in the northern part of the region, Gattinara is known for producing elegant, structured wines from Nebbiolo (locally called Spanna). The area’s volcanic soils, combined with its cooler climate and Alpine influence, contribute to wines of remarkable minerality, bright acidity, and longevity. Gattinara’s reputation peaked in the 19th century, and while its fame may have been eclipsed by Barolo and Barbaresco in modern times, it remains a cherished expression of Nebbiolo. Recognized as DOCG in 1990, Gattinara is revered for its complex bouquet of red berries, roses, earthy spices, and a unique mineral edge that reflects its volcanic terroir.

2. Pairing

Gattinara’s balance of acidity, refined tannins, and complex flavors makes it a superb companion to a range of Piedmontese and northern Italian dishes.

  • Beef Brasato (Braised Beef): The wine’s earthy undertones and structured tannins enhance the savory depth of slow-cooked beef in red wine.

  • Wild Mushroom Risotto: Its mineral freshness and floral notes highlight the umami richness of mushroom dishes.

  • Roasted Game (Venison or Pheasant): Gattinara’s spice and cherry flavors harmonize beautifully with the lean, slightly gamey character of roasted wild meats.

  • Aged Piedmontese Cheeses (Castelmagno or Toma): The wine’s vibrant acidity and elegant fruit profile balance the salty, nutty complexity of these traditional cheeses.

  • Polenta with Sausage and Rosemary: Gattinara’s herbal and spicy notes mirror the rustic flavors of herbed sausage, while its acidity cuts through the creamy polenta base.

3. The Top Wineries

  • Travaglini: One of the most iconic producers in Gattinara, Travaglini is known for its distinctive bottle shape and consistently high-quality Nebbiolo that expresses the region’s unique volcanic soils.

  • Nervi (owned by Conterno): With Conterno’s guidance, Nervi’s Gattinara wines combine traditional techniques with meticulous care, resulting in elegant, terroir-driven expressions.

  • Antoniolo: A family-run estate focused on crafting exceptional Gattinara that showcases Nebbiolo’s purity and the region’s hallmark minerality.

4. The Notes of Master Chef Gianluca Deiana Abis

Gattinara is a wine that truly captures the essence of Nebbiolo from the northern reaches of Piedmont. I love how its balance of red fruit, floral aromas, and volcanic minerality makes it both powerful and graceful. For me, Gattinara represents a deeper connection to Piedmont’s rich history, a reminder that some of the most intriguing wines come from places where tradition and terroir shine through. It’s a wine that invites you to slow down, appreciate its complexity, and savor the subtle interplay of flavors that make it so distinctive.
