1. History

Lambrusco di Sorbara is one of the most renowned and distinctive expressions of the Lambrusco family of wines, originating in Emilia-Romagna. Historically, Lambrusco was enjoyed as a simple, rustic wine, often served at local trattorias alongside regional dishes. Over time, Lambrusco di Sorbara earned a reputation as a finer, more elegant style of sparkling red wine. Produced from the Sorbara grape, which is known for its high acidity and light color, it stands out for its vibrant pink hue, floral aromas, and lively effervescence. Today, Lambrusco di Sorbara is appreciated not just as a casual, everyday wine, but as a sophisticated choice that pairs beautifully with food, embodying the joy and convivial spirit of Emilia-Romagna.

2. Pairing

Lambrusco di Sorbara’s fresh acidity, delicate tannins, and gentle sparkle make it a versatile partner for a wide range of dishes.

  • Cured Meats and Salumi: Its vibrant acidity cuts through the richness of Prosciutto di Parma, Mortadella, and Salame Felino, refreshing the palate.

  • Parmigiano Reggiano and Grana Padano: The wine’s floral notes and subtle fruit sweetness complement the nutty, savory flavors of these iconic Italian cheeses.

  • Gnocco Fritto with Salumi: This classic pairing of crispy fried dough and cured meats finds balance in Lambrusco di Sorbara’s light body and bright acidity.

  • Tortelli di Zucca (Pumpkin Ravioli): The wine’s fresh, fruity profile contrasts beautifully with the sweetness of the pumpkin filling and the richness of butter and sage sauce.

  • Lightly Spiced Dishes or Balsamic-Glazed Pork: Its floral and fruity notes work well with a touch of sweetness and spice, enhancing the flavors without overwhelming them.

3. The Top Wineries

  • Cleto Chiarli: One of the oldest and most respected producers of Lambrusco, Chiarli crafts exceptional Lambrusco di Sorbara that showcases the grape’s signature floral and fruity character.

  • Paltrinieri: Renowned for their dedication to quality, Paltrinieri produces elegant, terroir-driven Lambrusco di Sorbara that captures the essence of the variety.

  • Cantina della Volta: A boutique winery specializing in traditional method sparkling wines, including refined Lambrusco di Sorbara that demonstrates the grape’s versatility and sophistication.

4. The Notes of Master Chef Gianluca Deiana AbisLambrusco di Sorbara is a wine that brings joy and elegance to the table. I love its ability to brighten a meal with its effervescence and vibrant flavors, cutting through rich foods and enhancing delicate ones. For me, this wine embodies the lively, welcoming nature of Emilia-Romagna—a region known for its delicious cuisine and warm hospitality. Lambrusco di Sorbara may have started as a humble local wine, but it has evolved into a sophisticated, food-friendly companion that never fails to elevate a dining experience.
