1. History
Masseto is one of Italy’s most prestigious and sought-after wines, produced entirely from Merlot grown on the single-vineyard site of the same name in Bolgheri, Tuscany. The vineyard sits on a unique blue clay slope, which plays a crucial role in the wine’s distinctive character. Introduced in the 1980s, Masseto quickly gained a reputation as a world-class Merlot, rivalling the finest Pomerols. Over the decades, meticulous viticulture, low yields, and attention to detail in winemaking have cemented Masseto’s status as a benchmark of excellence, showcasing Tuscany’s ability to produce an extraordinary Merlot with depth, power, and elegance.
2. Pairing
Masseto’s opulence, complexity, and velvety tannins make it a perfect match for refined, richly flavored dishes.
Beef Wellington: The wine’s plush texture and ripe dark fruit notes enhance the delicate balance of tender beef, mushroom duxelles, and flaky pastry.
Braised Veal Shanks (Osso Buco): Its depth and earthiness complement the succulent veal and rich, slow-cooked sauce.
Roast Duck with Cherry Sauce: Masseto’s dark cherry and plum flavors resonate beautifully with the dish’s fruity glaze, while its structure supports the richness of the duck.
Aged Parmigiano Reggiano or Grana Padano: The cheese’s nutty, salty complexity is elevated by the wine’s concentrated flavors and long finish.
Truffle-Infused Risotto or Pasta: Masseto’s earthy undertones and silky tannins pair exquisitely with the luxurious aroma and taste of black or white truffles.
3. The Top Wineries
Masseto Estate: Masseto itself is produced exclusively from the single vineyard of the same name, which is managed by the Ornellaia team. While other producers in Tuscany create exceptional wines, Masseto is unique in that it comes from a single vineyard that has achieved almost mythical status for its unparalleled quality and distinct terroir.
