Morellino di Scansano

Morellino di Scansano

By Master Chef Gianluca Deiana Abis

1. History

Morellino di Scansano hails from the Maremma region in southern Tuscany, near the medieval town of Scansano. Recognized as a DOCG wine in 2007, its name “Morellino” refers to the local name for Sangiovese, which comprises at least 85% of the blend. The region’s coastal influence, warm Mediterranean climate, and diverse soils help create a wine that is fruit-forward, approachable, and distinctly Tuscan. Historically, Morellino di Scansano was considered a rustic, everyday wine, but in recent decades, a focus on quality has brought it international recognition. Known for its ripe cherry and berry flavors, soft tannins, and refreshing acidity, Morellino di Scansano is celebrated as one of Tuscany’s most charming and food-friendly reds.

2. Pairing

Morellino di Scansano’s vibrant fruit, moderate structure, and balanced acidity make it an excellent match for both rustic and refined dishes.

  • Pappardelle al Cinghiale (Wild Boar Ragù): The wine’s bright red fruit and subtle spice complement the hearty, gamey ragù, enhancing the dish’s flavors.

  • Porchetta or Roast Pork: Its soft tannins and juicy cherry notes harmonize with the savory, herby flavors of slow-roasted pork.

  • Grilled Lamb Chops with Rosemary: Morellino’s lively acidity and touch of earthiness pair beautifully with the smoky, aromatic lamb.

  • Aged Pecorino Toscano or Grana Padano: The wine’s fresh fruit and smooth texture balance the sharp, nutty character of these cheeses.

  • Vegetable Lasagna or Eggplant Parmigiana: Morellino’s light structure and ripe berry flavors complement the layers of tomato, cheese, and roasted vegetables.

3. The Top Wineries

  • Le Pupille: A benchmark producer known for crafting elegant, terroir-driven Morellino di Scansano that highlights the region’s unique qualities.

  • Terenzi: A family-run estate producing approachable, fruit-forward Morellino wines with a focus on quality and consistency.

  • Fattoria Mantellassi: One of the most respected producers in the region, Mantellassi creates expressive Morellino wines that embody Maremma’s coastal charm.

4. The Notes of Master Chef Gianluca Deiana Abis

Morellino di Scansano is a wine that I always find delightful. It’s lively, approachable, and brimming with the flavors of ripe red fruit and Mediterranean herbs. I love how its balance of freshness and softness makes it a natural companion for a wide range of dishes, from a simple plate of pasta to a beautifully roasted lamb. For me, Morellino represents the sunny, relaxed spirit of southern Tuscany—a wine that invites you to savor every sip and enjoy life’s simplest pleasures.
