Negroni Martini
By Master Chef Gianluca Deiana Abis
History
The Negroni and the Martini are two of Italy’s most famous cocktails, each with its own legacy. The Negroni, born in Florence in 1919, is known for its perfectly balanced bitterness, while the Martini, influenced by Italy’s love for vermouth, is the ultimate expression of elegance. The Negroni Martini blends these two classics by incorporating gin, vermouth, and a touch of Campari, creating a sophisticated drink that is smooth yet complex, bitter yet refreshing—ideal for aperitivo lovers.
Ingredients
45ml (1.5 oz) London Dry Gin (or Italian gin like Malfy con Limone or Gin del Professore)
15ml (½ oz) Dry Vermouth (Cocchi Americano or Martini Riserva Speciale Ambrato)
15ml (½ oz) Campari
A dash of orange bitters (optional, for extra depth)
Ice cubes
Orange peel or lemon twist, for garnish
Instructions
Chill the Glass:
Place a Martini glass in the freezer for about 10 minutes to achieve the perfect chill.
Mix the Drink:
Fill a mixing glass with ice.
Pour in the gin, dry vermouth, Campari, and orange bitters (if using).
Stir gently for about 30 seconds to properly chill and dilute the cocktail.
Strain and Serve:
Strain into the chilled Martini glass using a fine strainer.
Garnish:
Express an orange peel over the drink to release its essential oils, then drop it in or discard it.
For a sharper citrus touch, a lemon twist also works beautifully.
Perfect Pairing – Italian Aperitivo Companion
Parmigiano Reggiano & Grissini Torinesi – The rich umami of aged Parmigiano Reggiano paired with crispy grissini Torinesi (thin Italian breadsticks) complements the bitterness and herbal complexity of the Negroni Martini.
Chef Tip:
For a slightly sweeter and more aromatic variation, swap dry vermouth for red vermouth (Carpano Antica Formula or Punt e Mes), adding a richer, rounder taste.
A cocktail for those who appreciate bold flavors, the Negroni Martini is an elevated take on Italian aperitivo culture—timeless, elegant, and full of character. Salute! 🍸
