Pineapple & Basil Martini
By Master Chef Gianluca Deiana Abis
History
Though pineapple isn’t native to Italy, its bright, juicy flavor pairs beautifully with fresh basil, an essential ingredient in Italian cuisine. This Martini combines the natural sweetness of pineapple with the peppery, slightly anise-like notes of basil, creating a cocktail that is both vibrant and sophisticated—a perfect aperitivo for warm evenings.
Ingredients
50ml (1.75 oz) Premium Italian Vodka (Mamma Mia or VKA Vodka)
25ml (¾ oz) Fresh Pineapple Juice
10ml (⅓ oz) Fresh Lime Juice
15ml (½ oz) Dry Vermouth (Cocchi Americano or Martini Riserva Speciale Ambrato)
4-5 Fresh Basil Leaves
5ml (1 teaspoon) Honey or Simple Syrup (adjust to taste)
Ice cubes
Basil leaf or pineapple wedge, for garnish
Instructions
Chill the Glass:
Place a Martini glass in the freezer for about 10 minutes for the perfect chill.
Muddle the Basil:
In a cocktail shaker, gently muddle the basil leaves with the honey (or simple syrup) and lime juice to release the essential oils and enhance the aroma.
Shake the Drink:
Add the vodka, fresh pineapple juice, and dry vermouth to the shaker.
Fill with ice and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds.
Strain & Serve:
Double strain into the chilled Martini glass to ensure a smooth texture.
Garnish:
Float a single basil leaf on top or place a pineapple wedge on the rim for an elegant finish.
Perfect Pairing – Italian Aperitivo Companion
Prosciutto & Melon Skewers – The saltiness of Prosciutto di Parma and the natural sweetness of Cantalupo melon beautifully balance the bright flavors of the cocktail, making it an ideal Italian aperitivo pairing.
Chef Tip:
For an extra herbaceous depth, infuse the vodka with basil beforehand by letting a few leaves steep in the bottle for 24 hours. This will add a richer, more aromatic basil essence to the drink.
A tropical yet refined Pineapple & Basil Martini, perfect for summer evenings and stylish aperitivo moments. Salute! 🍍🌿🍸
