Rosso Conero

Rosso Conero

By Master Chef Gianluca Deiana Abis

1. History

Rosso Conero DOC is one of Marche’s standout red wines, produced along the slopes of Monte Conero, a coastal mountain near the Adriatic Sea. This appellation is dominated by Montepulciano, often with a small addition of Sangiovese, resulting in a wine that combines rich fruit flavors with a firm structure. Rosso Conero has been a symbol of this region’s winemaking heritage for centuries, benefiting from the unique microclimate created by the sea’s cooling breezes and the area’s calcareous, clay-rich soils. The DOC was officially established in 1967, and today, Rosso Conero is recognized for its balance of ripe fruit, earthy undertones, and an undeniable sense of place.

2. Pairing

Rosso Conero’s full body, ripe tannins, and vibrant acidity make it a perfect match for robust, flavorful dishes.

  • Braised Lamb with Rosemary: The wine’s dark fruit and herbal notes echo the dish’s aromatic flavors, creating a harmonious pairing.

  • Wild Boar Stew: Rosso Conero’s earthy undertones and structured tannins enhance the rich, gamey character of wild boar, balancing the dish’s intensity.

  • Mushroom and Sausage Ragù over Pappardelle: Its bright acidity and subtle spice complement the umami of mushrooms and the savory richness of Italian sausage.

  • Aged Pecorino or Parmesan: The wine’s depth and balance make it an excellent partner for nutty, salty aged cheeses.

  • Grilled Eggplant or Roasted Vegetables: The wine’s red fruit and earthy profile enhance the smoky sweetness of grilled or roasted Mediterranean vegetables.

3. The Top Wineries

  • Fattoria Le Terrazze: A historic estate known for crafting elegant Rosso Conero wines that emphasize balance, terroir, and the unique character of Monte Conero’s vineyards.

  • Moroder: Renowned for producing refined, age-worthy Rosso Conero that highlights the region’s traditional winemaking methods and the full potential of Montepulciano.

  • Conte Leopardi Dittajuti: A family-run winery that focuses on high-quality, terroir-driven Rosso Conero, showcasing the richness and elegance of this coastal DOC.

4. The Notes of Master Chef Gianluca Deiana Abis

Rosso Conero is a wine that I find truly captivating. Its bold structure, layered flavors, and vibrant acidity make it an exceptional choice for hearty dishes and a reminder of Marche’s winemaking prowess. I love how Rosso Conero reflects its coastal origins, offering a perfect blend of ripe fruit, earthy complexity, and a touch of sea breeze freshness. For me, opening a bottle of Rosso Conero is like bringing a piece of Monte Conero’s natural beauty and history to the table—a wine that feels deeply connected to its place of origin and offers a memorable experience with every sip.
