Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato

Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato

By Master Chef Gianluca Deiana Abis

1. History

Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato is a unique red wine from the Monferrato hills in Piedmont, crafted exclusively from the rare Ruché grape. The origins of this variety are somewhat mysterious, though it is believed to have been cultivated in the area for centuries. Officially recognized as a DOC in 1987 and elevated to DOCG status in 2010, Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato remains a niche wine that showcases the exceptional diversity of Piedmont’s viticulture. Known for its intense floral aromas—especially roses and violets—along with red berry notes and hints of spices, Ruché delivers a distinctive, aromatic profile that sets it apart from the region’s more widely known Nebbiolo-based wines. With limited production and a strong sense of place, Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato is both a hidden gem and a true expression of the Monferrato terroir.

2. Pairing

Ruché’s vibrant acidity, floral aromatics, and soft tannins make it an excellent choice for dishes that benefit from a wine with both fragrance and freshness.

  • Duck Breast with Berry Sauce: Ruché’s bright red fruit and floral notes complement the savory duck and sweet-tart berry glaze.

  • Tagliatelle with White Truffle: The wine’s aromatic complexity enhances the earthy, luxurious character of white truffles.

  • Caponata (Sicilian Eggplant Stew): Its floral and fruity profile balances the sweet-sour flavors of this classic vegetable dish.

  • Aged Goat Cheese or Robiola: The wine’s light structure and aromatic intensity pair beautifully with soft, creamy cheeses that have a hint of tanginess.

  • Porcini Mushroom Risotto: Ruché’s earthy undertones and lively acidity elevate the umami of porcini mushrooms, creating a harmonious pairing.

3. The Top Wineries

  • Luca Ferraris: One of the leading producers of Ruché, Ferraris is known for crafting elegant, aromatic wines that highlight the grape’s unique personality.

  • Montalbera: A family-run estate dedicated to preserving and elevating Ruché’s reputation, Montalbera creates complex, terroir-driven wines.

  • Cantina Sant’Agata: This winery focuses on traditional methods and meticulous vineyard care, resulting in high-quality Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato that reflects the essence of the region.

4. The Notes of Master Chef Gianluca Deiana Abis

Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato is a wine that never fails to intrigue and delight me. Its intense floral aromas and unique flavor profile make it stand out among the great wines of Piedmont. For me, Ruché is a celebration of the unexpected—a rare gem that offers a completely different experience than the region’s more famous varietals. I love pairing it with dishes that allow its delicate perfume and vibrant fruit to shine, turning a simple meal into something truly memorable. Ruché reminds me that the beauty of Italian wine lies not only in tradition but also in the unexpected discoveries that keep us coming back for more.
